Adolesent Anorexia

Hi,

I don’t if this is the right place to write this but here goes anyway.  We live in Hamilton and have an 11 yr old niece who has been diagnosed with anorexia,  we are looking for anyone who has been (or is going) through the same thing to talk and share ideas.

At the moment we are receiving care through mental health,  their main concern is weight gain before we start on anything else but a nutritionist and psychologist(?) are next.

No one we know has been through something like this and we are feeling very lonely and isolated.  We would greatly appreciate any contact (support).

  1. Hi,
Anorexia is immensely stressful for the suffer and for the family. The sense of helplessness is profoundly painful for all involved. Yet, I agree, hearing of other families can be very valuable.

Dear members and readers of this site, I ask you if you would be kind enough to share your experiences with this horrible disease?
    Many thanks,
    Charles Fishman

    Hi
My 15 year old son was diagnosed with anorexia earlier this year. He ended up being sectioned under the mental health act and being sent to a secure mental health unit to try and stabilise his weight. He is out now and living in a residential home here. He is still very ill and we fight battles everyday to keep him alive I feel. It is a heartbreaking disease and just so hard to fathom. The feelings of helpless are sometimes overwhelming. I would like the chance to talk with others going through the same fight.

    Hi Pip,
My 16 year old daughter was diagonosed with anorexia last year and has just been discharged from the residential care programme here. We too are finding it really tough to get her to the minimum weight required for her to start getting well. It is an extremely distructive disease on everyone involved and I can strongly agree with the feelings you are having as we are constantly overwhelmed and not sure what to do to help her.

Was the residential care, CREDS in Johnsonville?

hi i have been in recovery from anorexia and i would say while weight gain is important, the mental side of it is more important. your neice needs to accept that she needs to get better and she has to weant this and understand why iots important. lots of therapy. i was forced into recovery and here i am at a healthy weight but im now in a binge eating- starving- purging cycle. also self harm. not pretty, so focus on making sure she feels well, or it will never truely go away

He’s just moved to CREDS today after his second sectioning. Hoping this is the break we are needing

Try looking up F.E.A.S.T. on the internet and going onto ‘Around the Dinner Table’. It is a website for care givers of people with Eating Disorders where people can share ideas and experiences etc.

  • Hello Charles! I am unsure if you will even remember who I am haha, but this is [name withheld] – I saw you in (I think) 2017 with anorexia.

  • My wife and I felt quite emotional last Monday after our short Zoom session. All three of us hugged. It felt like the end of a relatively short but profoundly enriching journey with you which started in June at your home office on Waiheke Island.

  • Dear Dr Fishman Thank you so much for this website. I have a long history of swinging between bulimia and compulsive over-eating. I am currently a compulsive over-eater.
