Betsy addresses conflict

Betsy came to me because of her compulsive overeating, she weighed 160 kg that was steadily gaining. Like many people in her situation, she had tried all the different weight loss programmes; with dieting she found she only gained weight faster.

We worked well together – she espoused the treatment model – she systematically addressed her problematic relationships and avoided isolation. She was doing very well, until one weekend.

A man she knew professionally had been calling her and writing letters to her. She felt that this was sexual harassment. Each time, describing herself as a snivelling wimp, she had done nothing about it.

Her eating disorder exacerbated that weekend after he called her and harassed her. This man was a few years younger than her, was married with two kids, and Betsy knew his mother. What follows is a re-enactment of a therapy intervention of myself and my co-therapist, supporting her as she addresses this conflict that she had avoided for four years, and that is telling him to stop sexually harassing her.

In this video, professional actors re-enact an actual session with Dr Fishman. The video is shared with the permission of the client, and names have been changed.

  • Hello Charles! I am unsure if you will even remember who I am haha, but this is [name withheld] – I saw you in (I think) 2017 with anorexia.

  • My wife and I felt quite emotional last Monday after our short Zoom session. All three of us hugged. It felt like the end of a relatively short but profoundly enriching journey with you which started in June at your home office on Waiheke Island.

  • Dear Dr Fishman Thank you so much for this website. I have a long history of swinging between bulimia and compulsive over-eating. I am currently a compulsive over-eater.
